Calprotectin is a calcium binding protein, expressed in neutrophils and monocytes. Fecal Calprotectin is a marker for inflammatory and neoplastic gastrointestinal diseases. The differentiation between patients with irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) is often difficult and leads to unnecessary coloscopies. Our IDK® Calprotectin ELISA enables the differential diagnosis in these two patient groups. The determination of Calprotectin in stool correlates very well with histological and endoscopic parameters of disease activity in Morbus Crohn and Colitis ulcerosa. In contrast to previous standard markers of inflammation (e.g. CRP, ESR, HB), an elevated Calprotectin-level is a superior indicator for relapse. Therefore, Calprotectin is an ideal marker for therapy monitoring in IBD patients. The parameter exhibits a high negative predictive value: If the Calprotectin-level in stool is low, there is a high likelihood that there is no inflammatory organic disease in the intestinal tract.
